Before your surgery day, you’ll need to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the hospital on your surgery day (or plan to take a taxi). On your upcoming surgery day you’ll be mildly sedated during the procedure so you may NOT drive, operate hazardous machinery, or sign important documents after your surgery for the remainder of the day. |
At bedtime on the night before surgery, you’ll stop eating, drinking, and/or taking diabetic (insulin or tablets) and/or diuretic medications (fluid pill). DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT, INCLUDING WATER. |
On surgery day, continue to take all medications for blood pressure, heart problems, asthma or epilepsy. Use small sips of water. Stop all medication 2 hours before surgery. |
On the morning of surgery, use one drop of Vigamox® (unless otherwise directed by Dr. Emara). |
Bring the following with you to the hospital:
– Your daily medications (in their original containers)
– Your health card
– If you use contact lenses, your contact lens container. |
Wear loose, comfortable clothing because you will change into a gown. Sweat pants and a button-up short sleeve shirt are ideal. |
Don’t bring jewelry or large sums of money. Bring only cab fare if necessary. The hospital assumes no responsibility in case of loss. |
Arrive at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital. The best entrance to use is the main entrance. |
Head straight through the lobby towards the back of the hospital. The cataract clinic is on the lower level. You can follow the stairs on the left down and proceed through the cafeteria, then follow the signs to the eye clinic. |
Stop at the stop sign and take a number. |
Have a seat in the Family Waiting Room around the corner to the right. |
You’ll be called to the P.A.C. Registration Office near the stop sign to register. |
Shortly thereafter you’ll be taken for a little more paperwork with Dr. Emara’s friendly team. Please wear a short sleeve buttoned shirt. You’ll remove make up, hair ornaments, and contact lenses. Rings that can’t be removed will be secured with tape. |
After a brief medical check, some eye drops will be administered and you’ll wait comfortably for about 20 minutes while the drops take effect. |
You’ll be placed on a bed and have a cap put over your hair. |
Your eye will be cleaned and prepared, and an intravenous may be started before your procedure and after some time you will be taken into the operating room. |
A sheet will be placed over your whole body, covering everything except the eye to be operated on. |
After your procedure, you’ll be moved to the recovery area for a short time. You’ll be given something to eat and drink. The nurse will give you an appointment to see the doctor the next day and instructions for the remainder of the day. An eye shield will be placed over your eye. The eye shield will be removed the next morning, and you will need to wear this eye shield when sleeping for 1 week. |
Go home and please take it easy!
You will not take any eye drops for the rest of the day. |
